When I started this blog, there was much to look forward to. I knew I would meet fantastic bloggers from all over the world, find a place for my blog, make friends and become a part of the blogging community.
What I didn't expect were these other surprising benefits that manifested with time:
1. An Interest in Photography - I was not a keen photographer. I took the usual photos while on holiday and at family events, but my Sony Cybershot didn’t see much daylight outside of these occasions. However, doing posts on outfits meant my skills had to improve and fast. I did a short course on the basics of Digital Photography and learnt how to edit my photos.
2. My First Love - I did a lot of writing in college (a degree in English Literature demanded it) but later the opportunity to write articles and papers dwindled to almost nothing. I no longer practiced a skill I once loved. Writing posts for my blog rekindled my love of the written word and I was happy to add a paragraph or two to each post. My 'voice' tends to be humourous and self-deprecating because I firmly believe laughter is a great ice-breaker and leveller!
3. Smart Shopping - When my blog was a few months old, I knew I had to become a smart shopper. I didn't want to spend all my earnings on clothes, shoes and bags. Besides servicing a mortgage there were other things to indulge in; think concerts, plays, holidays, laptops....! Smart shopping meant buying items with classic appeal and great quality and getting the most from my purchases by wearing them differently each time. I highly recommend closet shopping; a fun, free way to create new looks.
4. Learning new skills - Being a blogger means I've had to learn new skills like marketing, getting the most out of social media and staying tech-savvy. Phew, that's sounds like a lot, but it isn't. There's still a lot I haven't tried, but plan to.
5. This time, last year - A blog is of course an online diary but by doing posts on trends, events and happenings, I can visit my archives and see not just what I wore a year ago but what I was doing or was interested in. Now that is one more benefit I didn't envision.

I really love having my blog archive -- all my life I would try to keep a diary and fail epically - since starting the blog, i finally have that, not to mention the photos, and the wonderful comments from my blog friends around the world.
It is really surprising, and quite wonderful the way these blogs really help us grow, and grow with us.
Chic on the Cheap
It's surprising to me that people still pop in and are curious of what you are up to and are almost taking part in your post not only by posting a comment but by just visiting!
Since I blog I feel that I can share my opinions better get more feedback on my creations and see the hidden corners of the world. It's amazing to me that one comments is from Brazil the next from the UK, France ets... love how people get together because of blogging!
You have just written my same thoughts.
Amazing!!!

I heartily agree with all, especially learning to shop smart.

I agree with you! There are so many great perks to blogging - I've learned the most about photography/lighting and have really grown to love it as a hobby!
You're so right about all of these - blogging has been such a rewarding experience for me for the same reasons that you give!

You are very right about it all. Blogging is such a great way to meet amazing people, learn about photography and grow as a person! Wish you a lovely Tuesday, adrling

I was JUST thinking about this some time back ... I think I have the same learning curve as you! :)

I agree, blogging has been so rewarding, getting to meet other people with the same passion has been marvelous! Blogging makes me think of some quote that I think Doctor Seuss,or some one said, Oh the place you'll go the people you'll meet (I think thats it, or the gist of it).
What a wonderful post! I definitely agree that my interest in photography has really increased once I starting blogging. Also, the time management looking at a busy day and finding a block of time to take photos and write a post. Another surprising benefit? Really learning not to care about the haters, but to listen to those that want to help you. And how to discern between the two.
This is a really nice post...
I think the most surprising thing for me was that people actually care to look at my blog and where I travel, etc!.. LoL.. I really enjoy blogging more than I thought I would :-)

Blogging definitely has a lot of benefits. I think I've become a better photographer and better at the other skills you listed as well.
As well as that, I've found that I'm a lot more creative with my outfits and have more fun when I dress up.
I agree with all of the points you made 100%! Blogging has really become a love for me...xo
Thanks Kavery for the sweet comment! I completely agree with all of the points. I am learning so much from blogging and am enjoying every bit of it.

I agree with you. Isn't blogging a wonderful thing. It enriches your life in so many ways :)
I seriously love this post! My favorite has to be all the amazing people that I have "met" while blogging. I never knew that there were so many people out there with the same interests as me and thought the same things I thought were cool, were cool!
Very good post, I have learned a great deal with blogging in general, meeting incredible people who are supportive & it's aided me in staying current in technology & social media. I mean a year & half ago I didn't have a facebook or twitter account! & I'm tech savvy, lol
You're completely right dear! <3
I wholeheartedly agree to what you´ve said because I love photography and I because I wasn´t really a smart shopper before.
For me, blogging is also a great opportunity to connect with other people around the world without leaving your doorstep. Isn´t that great? :)
great post. so many great points made here. i loved reading it.
It's definitely a good creative outlet for me... And I'm learning so much about photography!

I feel very similar on many of these: the blog made me a bit more visual (I enjoy taking pictures and this motivates me, even if I'm not good at it). It keeps my writing skills alive, at least in some ways. And I love reading my old archives! xo bb
oh I totally agree about smart shopping and learning new skills, I think I've gotten better at make up and there are so many cheap places on the internet to buy things than in the malls!
Learning new skills is a big one for me, as well. I really didn't know much about HTML when I first started blogging 2 1/2 years ago. Now a lot of people ask me for help with coding - it's such an incredible feeling to have learned something so worthwhile doing something I love...blogging! :)
definitely meeting new people and being inspired. oh and the smart shopping doesn't work for me i am afraid, on the contrary
I def agree with all the benefits you wrote. Photography plays a big role as well as marketing strategy. Thanks for sharing all of these :) Meeting new people is the best part about blogging!
Ps: I’m hosting a beautiful stationary GIVEAWAY today! I bet you will love it!!!
Kisses, darling and have a lovely day
The biggest benefit that I have received from blogging is the sense of community that has formed between me and other bloggers. I can honestly say that my followers are my friends. I make an effort to know each person who comments on my blog, and I count some of them as closer to me than people who I know in person.

I love this post! I agree with all of these. I have definitely gained a passion for photography and writing. Plus, blogging is my journal now. :)
My favorite aspect of blogging is all the friends I have met. I used to be very lonely and now I feel like I have a family of friends always with me. It's awesome.
My 1st love is also writing. After a bit of a break, it is so good to get back into it. Great blogging benefits. I'd say one of my blogging benefits is that I am more adventurous in the way I dress now. :)SarahD
This is such a great topic and I agree with all of your points! Blogging taught me a lot of things and I made really amazing friends. To me, that was the biggest reward of blogging. xoxxooo
#1 has definitely come about for me too!
Love this list. Smart shopping is a must when you're a fashion blogger - I agree!
I totally agree with these! I've also met so many people that I wouldn't have if it weren't for my blog - I love that part of it!
This is so true there are so many benefits to blogging!
One for be is that it has helped me find my style since I can express myself on my blog. Before my blog I never would have been brave enough to wear some of the things I wear now and love

Gosh you totally nailed it. A blog is so much more than what it appears! One of my favorite things has been developing friendships, such a great benefit :)
i feel the exact same way! blogging is really a positive thing in my life :)

I couldn't agree more.
I've done more writing and photo snatching since I started my blog than I have in my life :D

Lovely post, and totally agree with all the point you made. Although not sure I've become a smart shopper.. more like.. more aware of where to buy from :P
I have learnt SO much about photography too :) and I was surprised that so many people are actually interested in what I have got to say :)

Awwww what a sweet post!
I have met fabulous friends from all over the world as a result of blogging, and you are one of them, darling!

I agree with everything you said but one more thing..
The amount of amazing people you connect!

Love posts like that - reading how others benefited from something opens your eyes to a lot of things too. As for me, I believe I benefited from my blog in some very unique ways due to the nature of my blog. But I wrote about it already :)
These are all so true and very much the same for me! I mainly love my blog because it gives me a chance to practice my photography nearly every day. Photography is one of my first loves, and I've gotten so much better at it since the days before I started my blog. Same about writing. When I started college, I was set majoring in journalism. That REALLY changed, but just because I'm not writing as a career doesn't mean it can't be a hobby!
so true! I think many of us are frustrated writers! xo
Loving the text change! And this is a great post for Links a la Mode, darling! I learned so many of the same things...plus I've made some wonderful new friends, all over the world, because of blogging.
The friends that we make from blogging is totally UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!!!!!!! And lots of love!
kisses

Oh! And also, I learned that I look amazing in big, dark circular glasses.
"I can visit my archives and see not just what I wore a year ago " -- Oh, I love this aspect of it! Now I know for sure what year I've gotten various pieces of clothing.
Really great post! I honestly didn't imagine I would be meeting and then caring about all of these people online.
It's been a great experience.

i agree with all your surprising benefits. my favorite part has been being consistently inspired. i find that the more i give and share the more that comes back to me. its really amazing.
I think blogging is a great way to meet fantastic people, learn about photography and the marketing.I have been blogging for 4 moths only,so I do not think I have lots of experience in that area, but I hope I will learn more, have a lovely weekend!
PS you have a new follower.

You are so spot on!! I've always loved photography, but wasn't motivated enough to really explore it and learn it. Blogging has definitely opened my love of photography, and taught me how to capture photos. I love the community aspect of blogging, it's fantastic.
xo
i couldn't have said it any better. i've learned a lot from blogging as well, including just about everything that you wrote here. my interest in photography has grown; i get to write all the time (journalism degree); and marketing has become such a big part of blogging!
love this post Kavery!
great post!!!! I'm agree with everything :D
xx
Have a nice weekend! :)

I really like this post!! Everything you say is so true!! The best thing of being a blogger is that I found and still find a lot of people who inspires me to be myself but at the same time to be original in my work (if I can call it like that). Thanks for your comment in my blog. www.stylepicture.blogspot.com
LOVE this! I couldn't agree more! Another benefit for me would have to be friends. I feel like that sounds so cheesy! But I've made some fantastic friends through blogging!
Beautiful post and I totally agree with you!
We love connecting with exciting, though provoking people with similar interests to us -- like you! xo style, she wrote
it is wonderful how blogging can teach us so much! Your list here is great. I think blogging helps feed my creativity, which I love.
I love the online diary one... it is so handy to have a space on the internet to keep track of everything.
But yeah to all of them, I was reading along nodding my head :)
I discovered my first love with blogging too - writing! That has to be the biggest benefit of blogging for me. I'm also with you on learning new skills too!
Awesome post!
I just started my blog and I really hope to reap all of these great benefits that you've listed! Thanks for the great post! -C.C.

Wonderful! I like how blogging keeps me accountable for making time to write.
I have learnt SO MUCH from blogging, from web design to photography like you mention, style, fashion history...I've become an expert at what I love and it's because of my writing and the community, reading other blogs and learning so much every day :)
